Plantas Studio is the design practice of João Doria de Souza (MFA Graphic Design, Yale School of Art, 2014; BA Visual Communications, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, 2007). We’re a sibling of Plantas Press and Good in Theory.

Based in Oslo, Norway but together with an international network of collaborators, we offer purpose-driven design & editorial services in the field of publications & exhibitions in the cultural sector.

The school attracted applicants from 17 countries and institutions including Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, Royal College of Art, ISIA Urbino, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Sandberg Institute, Yale University, Princeton, Cranbrook and Pratt Institute. A public programme at Grafill featured the ventriloquist Jan-Robert Henriksen, Tove Sivertsen of Tableau Paper, and researcher Ellef Prestsæter.

The theme explored the role of illusion as a way of being, working and generating knowledge — what’s involved in accepting, rejecting, validating and iterating such constructs, and how we use them to project and deal with what’s in front and ahead of us. Five parallel workshops ran during the week at 1857, a former lumberyard in the Grønland area of Oslo, along with a public programme of evening lectures. The 35 selected participants worked with tutors Talk Magazine (Eric Hu and Harry Gassel), Anu Vathra, Nicole Killian, Kristina Ketola Bore, João Doria de Souza and Andrea Pinochet. A print studio was ran by designer Sean Kuhnke.

    A Rear ViewBook, Self-Initiated, Publisher, Designer, Printer2016Artist Gustavo Prado works in sculpture, photography, installation, and video to configure and question interactions between body, space, and place. In this book, staple bound and risograph-printed with green and gold ink, Saul Ostrow gives a thoughtful and comprehensive interpretation of Prado’s oeuvre, analyzing specific works as well as themes and trajectories in the artist’s career. Among the works included in A Rear View are Harlem Tunnel, Narcissus, and The Unseen. Although the sculptural objects here are flattened into pages, Ostrow’s astute descriptions and interpretations of Prado’s work bring them back into the third and fourth dimensions. Most of the book contains Prado’s photographed work, along with titles and brief descriptions.

Over the past three years, Rogaland Kunstsenter has held an annual Summer School, exploring the formats of the school and learning through three different programs: The Wilson Exercises (2014), The Legend (2015), and How Many Cures Can a Curator Cure (2016). The overview of our summer school program was highlighted at the Alternative Art School Fair in New York in 2016 and is currently on view as a part of the Collective Good/Collaborative Effort exhibition at the Kunstsenter in Stavanger. The ISP program supported participants with workshops, seminars, group discussions, reading circles, day trips, and studio visits with our program faculty members, among them philosopher Philipp Kleinmichel, designer João Doria, critic and editor Kristina Ketola Bore, and performance artist Marthe Ramm Fortun.

Through computation and literature, 65 thousand fictional article titles are presented and indexed over 156 pages. For the third reprint of VPGL, João commissioned Iselin Steiro to write a reaction piece. Steiro’s response was a summary of her many experiences from working for Vogue — a conceptual memoir? This was the 17th edition of Guest Salons; an active meeting point for free conversations around and beyond fashion, once a month at International Library of Fashion Research.
